Fighting Fire with Fire: SARZA’s Contribution to Fire Risk Reduction

There is a certain allure in flames. How can something so mesmerising be so deadly?

This paradox is mirrored in swift water, where falling droplets resemble bright orange embers, and the waves seem to be searing flames reaching towards the sky.

Fire also has a remarkable ability to create its own wind. It alters the landscape and intensifies its spread with gusts fuelled by the heat it generates. An unchecked blaze can wreak havoc if not quickly subdued.

Fires have always been a natural part of South Africa’s environment. The country experiences two fire seasons — dry summers in the Western Cape and dry winters across the rest of the nation.

One way of stopping fires is to construct firebreaks. This is done by clearing areas of flammable material, thereby lowering fire intensity, improving firefighting efforts, and reducing the risk of veld fires spreading.

Recently, our SARZA Gauteng team engaged in controlled burns of firebreaks on a partner’s property, generously made available for our training throughout the year.

These controlled burns strategically reduce combustible materials, establishing essential firebreaks that contain wildfires and support natural ecological cycles, and benefiting fire-dependent plant species.

Firebreaks are most effective at night, where the glow of lingering coals that could spark devastating flare-ups is more visible.

Members of the team understand the urgency of action. The heat sears their skin, and smoke stings their eyes as they advance in their protective gear.

Steadily and surely, they walk forward. Teams ahead ensure the burning grass does not spiral out of control, while another group sweep behind to prevent stray embers from igniting chaos with unexpected flare-ups.

Fire is both a giver and taker of life. While we can partly anticipate its behaviour, its unpredictability grows with the elements that fuel it. A shift in wind can suddenly propel flames through dry grasslands, relentless and unchecked.

Effective fire management demands our most skilled and seasoned members. Novices find safety in their guidance, standing firm with fire beaters to suppress unexpected outbreaks.

Participating in these firebreak burns not only allows our team to give back to our supporters but also prepares members with valuable insights into controlled burns and effective veld firefighting techniques.

This hands-on experience ensures readiness for unit deployment in wilderness areas, farms, and reserves.

Honouring the Fallen Firefighters: A Tribute to Their Sacrifice

In the ongoing battle against wildfires in eastern KwaZulu-Natal, six firefighters tragically lost their lives. These brave individuals paid the ultimate price while combating intense fires fueled by scorching heat and strong winds.

Their sacrifice underscores the perilous nature of firefighting, highlighting the inherent dangers in this crucial work. As we navigate the complexities of fire management, we honour their memory and unwavering courage in confronting these formidable challenges.
