Shortly after the flash floods hit Ladysmith in KwaZulu Natal, SARZA was tasked by SAPS to assist with the search and recovery of people swept away in Ladysmith on 25 December 2023. SARZA responded with a team consisting of members from KZN, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Free State.
SARZA was instrumental in assisting with the search co-ordination, communication and logistics to all the search teams on the ground.
SARZA joined teams from SAPS Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Umhlali, Empangeni and Newcastle, consisting of Police Divers, Dive Support and K9 SAR as well as the Al-Imdaad Foundation, along with IPSS Medical Rescue.
Overall, 21 bodies have been recovered since the floods hit Ladysmith, a further 3 victims are still missing, pending verification, with local SAPS.
